Internet Chat rooms have transformed into a place for having synchronous conferences; committing sexual offenses through chat rooms is one type of Internet sex crime. Although the primary aim of such chat rooms are to share ideas among likely minded people, many pedophiles frequent such chatting rooms and try to deceive children or innocent people in a sexual trap. This freedom to chat is being abused for online sexual pleasure. Even porn photographs get exchanged during such abuses to exploit minors sexually. There are local and federal criminal statutes to penalize such activities.

Criminal Charges for Internet Sex Crimes

Federal laws for curbing such cyber crimes are harsher than that of the local laws. Rules of evidence do not favor the defendants and the penalties are hefty. Sexual conversation and solicitation for sexual favors from minors are also treated as Internet sexual crimes through Internet chat rooms.

On suspecting an individual, search warrant will be obtained to search the email account and the hard drive of the suspect’s system to frame charges. Some of the common criminal charges are as follows:

  • Charge of Attempted Chatroom Luring – for luring minors or children through chat room conversation to build a trust and eventually meet and assault them sexually. Penalties for such charges include fines, imprisonment of 1 to 20 years, criminal record, and registration as sexual offenders for life and cancellation of professional licenses.
  • Charge of Pandering of Obscenity – for distributing pornography through chat room to appeal the prurient interest of a person. Penalties are registration as sexual offenders for few years or life time and at times imprisonment for 1 year.
  • Charge of Child Exploitation /Charge of Child Pornography – for compelling minors to distribute or view pornography (treated as a felony charge). The penalties include 5 to 20 years of jail term and fines.

Entrapment

Entrapment is a tactic used by law enforcement officials to trap the Internet sexual crime offenders. Police officers masquerades as minors in Internet chat rooms and catches the sexual crime offenders. When someone has hacked into your wireless network and commit the offense in your identity then there are all chances of being accused of committing Internet sex crimes.
